SAINT-PETERSBURG CUP

The first Saint-Petersburg Wheelchair Basketball Cup was finished in Saint-Petersburg. Considering the fact that the tournament was held in the Yubileyniy Sports Palace during two days, the organizers decided to divide the participants into two groups. Then, the two group winners played in the cross-games (semifinals) to determine their final order. After that the teams played the finals and games for 3rd and 5th places. As a result, two teams played only 3 matches ("Wolves" and Latvia) and the others four games

The Austrian and Polish teams turned out to be much more skillful teams than all the others and the game between them became, as a matter of fact, the finals. The Austrians won in the tense struggle

The game between Belarusian and Turkish teams became one of the most exciting at the tournament. During all the game the teams struggled for every point. Before several seconds till the games end the Turks were two points ahead. But Minsk guys managed to equal the situation. The first extra time also ended in a draw. The second extra 5 minutes heated the atmosphere on the court to the highest degree. In a dramatic ending the victory was won by the Belarusians and the public awarded them with a storm of applause and cheers.
On the whole, the tournament proved to be an excellent practice in getting valuable experience of games with advanced teams. Minsk Wolves" havent taken part in such high-level competitions before yet.
Summing up the tournament, the coaches chose the best players in all the teams. The MVP in the Minsk Wolves was chosen Andrei Porakh.
The Public Union "RSCD" express our hearty thankfulness to the Department of physical culture, sports and tourism of the Minsk Executive committee for the assistance in arranging the trip to Latvia. We also appreciate the high-level organization and wonderful conditions for the tournaments participants to stay in Cesis.

"MINSK WOLVES" BECAME DOUBLE CHAMPIONS OF BELARUS!

The II Championship of Belarus on wheelchair basketball is over. Four teams took part in it (Minsk Wolves, Minsk Region, Gomel and Mogilev). After winning all the games, the Minsk Wolves became champions the second consecutive time. It faced no considerable challenge again, as the level of other Belarusian teams is much lower unfortunately. No wonder that the game with a Gomel team ended by the numbers of 103:11 in Minsk Wolves favour.
The technical basis of the regional teams is in very poor conditions. They have even no single basketball wheelchair (!!!) and had to perform using the chairs of the Minsk Wolves players (though those have only self-made basketball chairs).

Here is the final table of the Chanpionship:

VICTORIES COME TO THOSE WHO ARE STRIVING FOR THEM

When three years ago a newly formed Minsk Wolves wheelchair basketball team went to play the tournament of St. Petersburg Open, nobody thought of its victories yet.

No wonder, it was the attempt of the first Belarusian WB team. And nobody was surprised of loosing all the games then.
This time, after receiving the invitation to participate and learning the other teams taking part in the competition, we have made our minds to win at least two of four games. And we did it! The St. Petersburgs teams (Nevski Alliance & BasKI) proved to be more experienced (both teams were Russian champions many times), but we managed to beat Chance from Tyumen and Latvian team! So we became the third and received the cup and bronze medals from the organizers!
It is notable that our success is grounded just on our own efforts and enthusiasm, as the first WB team in Belarus still do not have real basketball wheelchairs, we simply have to rebuild and keep repairing usual active chairs to play. The national Ministry of Sports and Paralimpic Committee have never replied to our suggestions for cooperation. Moreover, we have no coach and the players have to arrange training sessions by our own.
